BLU-109 used on Paveway III - 8.87 KB (click to see larger pic) The BLU-109/B Hard Target Penetrator bomb was based on the design of the MK84 General Purpose Bomb to be used on the GBU-24B/B Paveway III Low Level Laser Guided Bomb. The BLU-109 was first made available in 1985.

BLU-109 compared to the MK84 (Click here for larger pic)The bomb body is made from forged gun-barrel steel, making it more resistant to impact against hard targets thus reducing the chance of the bomb body breaking apart. Compairing the differences between the BLU-109 and the MK84, here are the following improvements: no nose fuze well (cavity) thus stronger nose for penetration, the thickness of the BLU-109's body is at least an inch thick vice half-inch thick for the MK84, and last but not least the base plate where the fuze is located has been reinforced to sustain the shock of impact.
