AIR-2A Genie rocket fired from a CF-101 Voodoo aircraft - 34.3 KB

AIR-2A Genie Nuclear Rocket

AIR stands for Air Interceptor Rocket.

The AIR-2A Genie Rocket was first available in 1957 and stayed in service until the mid 1980s. The AIR-2A was carried on the CF-101 Voodoo as seen in the picture above. It was reputed that the warhead was nuclear but there was a lot of speculation to the veridity of it. Probably only a few people in Canada actually knew for sure. Nevertheless that AIr-2A rocket were treated the same way as if they did carry nuclear warheads.

AIR-2A Nuclear air2air Rocket on MF-9 trailer The Genie was a rocket and not a missile therefore its flight could not be changed once launched. It would flight straight towards a fleet of bombers and go off amongst their midst.

Long before the CF-101 Voodoo was phased out of the Canadian Military role the nuclear AIR-2A program was phased out. Myself never had worked on them is not sure if the Voodoo carried his secondary missiles only or carried conventional AIM-4Ds.

If you have any questions on the AIR-2A Genie rocket, send me an email and I'll see what I can do......
